Porgi, Amor, a cavatina from the Marriage of Figaro sung by Gundula Janowitz and conducted by Sir Georg Solti at Paris Opera Garnier in 1980. Friday 23rd February 2007 THE LAST KING OF SCOTLAND
Garrigan arrives in Uganda on a whim, partly to do good assisting in a rural hospital, and partly to party, which he does almost immediately with a fellow doctor's wife (Gillian Anderson). Garrigan soon encounters the new President, Idi Amin (Forest Whitaker), who promises a golden age for the African nation. Garrigan hits it off immediately with the rabid Scotland fan, who soon offers him a senior position in the national health department and becomes one of Amin's closest advisers. However as the years pass, Garrigan notice Amin's increasingly erratic behaviour that grows beyond a legitimate fear of assassination into a murderous insanity. Various people attempt to guide Garrigan and warn him of what he's getting himself into. He declines to see the truth until it's too late. The Ugandan landscape is shown in all its glory with the help of the amazing cinematography by Anthony Dod Mantle, while Whitaker's larger than life Amin is so convincing that you quickly forget he is acting. He is able to switch instantly from the happy charm that made Amin champion of the people, to the madness that led the infamous dictator to kill almost half a million. Click here to see
