GWYL GERDD LLANFYLLIN MUSIC FESTIVAL

Many past members of the Allegri Quartet joined the Quartet at the Llanfyllin Festival, founded by Bruno Schrecker over 30 years ago, and a favourite summer engagement with the Allegri ever since.

The festival began with two concerts featuring the current Allegri Quartet with Rian de Waal, which were held in Theatr Llwyn at Llanfyllin High School. During the week, David Roth gave a concert, "Voice and Violin" with the tenor Alexander Massey, and founding second violinist James Barton a solo recital.

There were other less formal events, and the festival closed with two concerts featuring past members David Roth, James Barton, Keith Lovell, Roger Tapping and Bruno Schrecker. We have prepared a report on the Festival.

RADIO THREE JOINS THE CELEBRATIONS

The Allegri's first public engagement of 2004 was an interview on "In Tune", BBC Radio Three's early evening programme. They performed excerpts from their next engagement, the Wigmore Hall concert of January 7th, and were interviewed by Sean Rafferty about the current Quartet, its members, and the manner in which it seeks to be true to its founders' vision, described by Richard Morrisson in his review of that Wigmore Hall concert as "a determination to prise open the music's heart".

As Peter Carter commented during the interview, it is hardly surprising that this 50th Anniversary Allegri still holds to Eli Goren's ideals, since whenever a Quartet seeks to recruit a new member, the existing members will seek not only a compatible tone and a compatible personality, but also a compatibility of musical aims and intent.
